 December 5 2025

Every vehicle makes a sound or two, but when your car starts “talking” to you in squeaks, rattles, or groans, it’s usually trying to tell you something important. Identifying these sounds early can be the difference between a quick adjustment and a costly breakdown.

At Great Lakes Auto Centre, our Bosch-trained technicians have spent over 30 years “speaking car.” Using advanced diagnostic tools and decades of experience, we help Forster-Tuncurry drivers get to the bottom of mysterious noises.

Here is your guide to common car noises and what they mean for your vehicle.

1. Squealing Under the Bonnet

The Sound: A high-pitched screeching or squealing, often loudest when you first start the engine or when you accelerate.

What it usually means: This is typically a sign of a worn or loose fan belt (serpentine belt). It could also indicate a failing pulley or an issue with the alternator bearing.

What to do: Don’t ignore it. A snapped belt can leave you stranded without power steering, cooling, or a charging battery. Our team can quickly inspect, tension, or replace your belts to keep things running smoothly.

2. Grinding or Squealing When Braking

The Sound: A sharp squeal or a heavy, metallic grinding sound when you apply the brakes.

What it usually means:

  •  Squealing: Your brake pads likely have “wear indicators” that screech to warn you they are getting low.
  • Grinding: This is more serious—it means your brake pads are completely worn down, and metal is rubbing against metal (the rotors).

What to do: This is a major safety concern. We recommend an immediate brake inspection.

3. Clicking During Turns

The Sound: A rhythmic clicking or popping noise that happens only when you are turning the steering wheel, usually at lower speeds.

What it usually means: This is a classic symptom of a failing CV (Constant Velocity) joint, typically caused by a torn rubber boot that has allowed grease to leak out and dirt to get in.

What to do: If caught early, we may be able to save the joint. If left too long, the entire axle may need replacing.

4. Thumping or Clunking Over Bumps

The Sound: A hollow “clunk” or “thud” when you drive over a speed bump or uneven road surfaces.

What it usually means: This usually points to worn suspension components, such as shock absorbers, struts, or bush links. It could also be a sign of a loose exhaust pipe.

What to do: Beyond the noise, worn suspension affects your tyre wear and handling. We can perform a comprehensive underbody check to identify exactly which component is reaching the end of its life.

5. Hissing From the Engine Bay

The Sound: A distinct hissing sound, often accompanied by a sweet smell or steam.

What it usually means: This is almost always a coolant leak from a hose, the radiator, or the water pump. The “hiss” is the sound of pressurized coolant escaping and hitting a hot engine surface.

What to do: Pull over and let the engine cool. Driving an overheating car can cause catastrophic engine damage. Our technicians can pressure-test your cooling system to find and fix the leak fast.

6. A Loud Roar or Deep Growl

The Sound: A deep, low-frequency growl that gets louder as you speed up, or a loud “exhaust roar” that sounds like a race car.

What it usually means:

  • Growl: Likely a worn wheel bearing. If the pitch changes when you veer slightly left or right, it’s almost certainly the bearings.
  • Roar: This usually indicates a hole in your exhaust system or a failed muffler.

What to do: Wheel bearings are vital for safety, and exhaust leaks can allow dangerous fumes into the cabin. Both should be inspected by a professional as soon as possible.
