Air conditioning: isn’t it just something that happens when you turn the dial on the dashboard?

For most car owners, that’s the sum of their thoughts about car air conditioning, although the truth is that aircon inside a vehicle is actually a complex series of processes that need a bit of attention to keep them working smoothly.

In brief, the inside of a car is cooled by removing the heat and moisture from the air, making it feel colder. This is done by refrigerant gas within the A/C system, which through a complex series of reactions is able to absorb the heat and provide you with cooler air for a more comfortable driving experience.

The key thing to remember? That refrigerant gas isn’t going to last forever, making it important to get a car air conditioning regas to make sure it’s working as it should and properly stocked.

When Do I Need a Regas?

It’s usually fairly easy to tell when your car’s air conditioning isn’t working as it should be. If your system is pumping out warm, stuffy air instead of a cool breeze, or is otherwise just not functioning as it should, it’s time for a regas.

Most cars need an aircon regas every 1-2 years, but this varies depending on the make and model. Next time you come in for a service, you can ask one of our mechanics to perform a simple test to check the state of your refrigerant gas.

Can’t I Just Leave It?

Fortunately, air conditioning isn’t necessary for a car to run safely…but that also means that an air conditioning regas is not included in most logbook services, which cover only the essentials.

Without refrigerant gas, your car’s A/C will simply be pushing hot air around the car, which can make for an unbearable drive on hot days with no wind. Residents of a cooler climate might be able to get away with it, but in Australia, no one wants to be caught out in warm weather without a way to cool themselves down in the car.

What’s Involved in an Aircon Regas?

For most vehicles, air conditioning regas will take around 45 minutes to an hour. If you need more extensive repairs to your air conditioning system it may take longer, but a regas is the only service you should normally need.

During the procedure, the mechanics at Great Lakes Auto Centre are able to perform a number of useful checks to your whole cooling system, making sure there are no leaks, cracks or other serious faults that can cause problems in the future.

We also take our responsibility to the environment seriously, meaning that we take extra special care in removing the gas from your car and replacing it with gases that meet the national standard for eco-friendly servicing.

We are ArcTick Approved meaning we are committed to minimising emissions and environmental damage and authorised to install, service and repair air conditioning systems.

How Do I Book a Regas?

The friendly team at Great Lakes Auto Centre is fully equipped with the tools and expertise to perform an air conditioning regas on all makes and models. Even with the included inspection of your cooling system, regassing is a fairly quick and easy service, although we’re also able to carry out more extensive repairs and services to your car’s A/C.
