Tyres are one of the most critical components of your vehicle, playing a vital role in ensuring safety, performance, and comfort on the road. However, like any other part of your car, tyres wear out over time and need replacing. Driving on worn or damaged tyres can be dangerous, so it’s essential to recognise the signs that indicate they are due for replacement. Here are the top five signs it’s time to invest in new tyres.

1.Tread Wear Beyond Legal Limits

In Australia, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm. Tyres must have at least this much tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre surface around the entire circumference. Tread depth is crucial for maintaining grip, particularly on wet roads where insufficient tread increases the risk of aquaplaning.
A simple way to check tread depth is using a tread depth gauge or the “matchstick test.” Insert a matchstick into the grooves of the tyre; if the coloured part of the matchstick remains visible, your tyres may not meet the legal requirement. To ensure safety, consider replacing tyres when the tread depth reaches 2-3mm, as performance diminishes significantly below this point.

2.Cracks, Bulges, or Damage on the Tyre Sidewall

Roads can be harsh on tyres, with potholes, gravel, and extreme temperatures contributing to wear and tear. Regularly inspect the sidewalls of your tyres for cracks, cuts, or bulges.
Cracks and cuts may occur due to exposure to the sun, dry conditions, or sharp objects. Bulges often indicate internal damage to the tyre’s structure, usually caused by impacts with kerbs or potholes. Any of these issues can compromise the tyre’s integrity, increasing the likelihood of a blowout. If you notice damage, have the tyre inspected by a professional immediately and replace it if necessary.

3.Uneven Tyre Wear

Uneven tyre wear is a common problem and is often a sign of other underlying issues, such as:

  • Incorrect Tyre Pressure: Overinflated tyres wear more in the centre, while under inflated tyres wear on the edges.
  • Wheel Misalignment: Causes tyres to wear unevenly on one side, affecting handling and safety.
  • Suspension Problems: Damaged or worn suspension components can also lead to irregular wear.

Regularly rotating your tyres and ensuring proper wheel alignment can help prevent uneven wear. However, if the wear is excessive or severe, it’s time to replace the tyres and address the root cause to prevent further damage.

4.Frequent Loss of Air Pressure

If you find yourself frequently needing to top up your tyres with air, it’s a sign something may be wrong. Tyres losing air pressure could indicate a slow puncture, a damaged valve, or issues with the tyre bead.

While small punctures may be repairable, consistent air loss often signals that the tyre has reached the end of its lifespan. Driving on underinflated tyres can reduce fuel efficiency, increase wear, and lead to overheating, which may result in a blowout. If you’re experiencing frequent air pressure issues, have your tyres inspected and replace them if necessary.

5.Tyres Older Than 5-6 Years

Even if your tyres appear to be in good condition with adequate tread depth, age can degrade their performance. Over time, the rubber compounds in tyres lose their elasticity, reducing grip and increasing the risk of cracking or structural failure.

Most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres every 5-6 years, regardless of their appearance. To check your tyre’s age, look for the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits represent the week and year of manufacture (e.g., “4518” means the tyre was made in the 45th week of 2018). Tyres older than six years should be replaced to maintain safety, even if they’re not visibly worn.
